Frank Curreri, WEC - “Right place, right time” has been a recurring theme in the distinguished career of Leonard Garcia. The 31-year-old Texas native snatched a slice of history a few years ago when he and Roger Huerta graced the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. Three months ago fate shined upon the giddy brawler yet again: Garcia and South Korea’s Chan Sung Jung kept fans on the edge of their seats by waging a back-and-forth fistic thriller that ringside commentator Joe Rogan instantly hailed as “Fight of the Decade.”

On April 24, 2010 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif., that is exactly what happened. For three spectacular rounds, featherweights Leonard Garcia and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung traded explosive punches, dynamic spinning backfists, and amazing kicks. Coined the “Fight of the Decade” by commentator Joe Rogan, the Garcia-Jung clash became an instant classic.

Once backstage, an exhausted Benson Henderson was whisked away on a gurney, loaded into an ambulance and he would spend the night in a local hospital. IV tubes extended from his arms to a machine that nourished him to cure his severe dehydration. Trainers sat at the 26-year-old’s bedside, offering encouragement, knowing the immediate physical misery of their star pupil would eventually yield to a lasting glory.
