On DVD - ‘Fight of the Decade’, 10 Other WEC Fights

Jul-19-2010

Frank Curreri, WEC - “Right place, right time” has been a recurring theme in the distinguished career of Leonard Garcia. The 31-year-old Texas native snatched a slice of history a few years ago when he and Roger Huerta graced the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine. Three months ago fate shined upon the giddy brawler yet again: Garcia and South Korea’s Chan Sung Jung kept fans on the edge of their seats by waging a back-and-forth fistic thriller that ringside commentator Joe Rogan instantly hailed as “Fight of the Decade.”

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – Sometimes in the middle of a mixed martial arts bout, a good old fashioned fight breaks out. On April 24, 2010 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif., that is exactly what happened. For three spectacular rounds, featherweights Leonard Garcia and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung traded explosive punches, dynamic spinning backfists, and amazing kicks. Coined the “Fight of the Decade” by commentator Joe Rogan, the Garcia-Jung clash became an instant classic.

Saturday Night Musings

Apr-26-2010

Michael DiSanto, UFC - I received about a dozen emails in the days leading up to last weekend’s Aldo vs Faber fight, asking whether I truly believed that Jose Aldo was among the best in the world, pound for pound, or if I took some liberties with hyperbole in my main event breakdown.

America meets the Korean Zombie

Apr-25-2010

At last night's Aldo vs. Faber Pay-Per-View, featherweight Chan Sung Jung went from unknown to cult hero. His fight against Leonard Garcia aired on Spike and quickly evolved into an all-out, crowd-pleasing war a la Bonnar/Griffin at the first TUF finale. The bout was named Fight of the Night, with commentators suggesting "of the Year" or "of the Decade" might be better descriptors. So who is this relentless warrior with the killer nickname? Find out in this interview from last month.

Aldo and Henderson Dominate, Retain Titles

Apr-25-2010

Frank Curreri, UFC – By the end of the third round, one of Urijah Faber’s cornermen carried the battered fighter to a stool. The hometown superstar could barely stand on his left leg, the unfortunate recipient of dozens of devastating kicks from former semi-pro soccer player Jose Aldo. The world featherweight champion from Brazil, who hasn’t lost in over four years, had ravaged his charismatic and courageous challenger with wicked kicks to the ribs and legs, and also repeatedly pounded The California Kid’s body with hard punches.

Urijah Faber: ‘That’s My Belt’

Apr-23-2010

Frank Curreri, UFC - Urijah Faber must be sick of hearing about it.

“It” is a certain logic called MMA math, and it goes something like this: Jose Aldo annihilated Mike Brown for the world featherweight title. And Mike Brown twice defeated Urijah Faber.

The many hats of Urijah Faber

Apr-23-2010

By Jordan Newmark - Belt or no belt, “The California Kid” Urijah Faber is the face of lighter weight MMA. Agile, creative and ferocious to his 145er opponents Faber is a fan favorite. (He's also, we hear, not entirely repulsive to the female fans among us.)

Second Wind: Champ Henderson Eyes 11th Straight Win In Cerrone Rematch

Apr-22-2010

Frank Curreri, UFC - He departed the cage, not entirely on his own power, but walking gingerly and having to lean on his trainers for support. Once backstage, an exhausted Benson Henderson was whisked away on a gurney, loaded into an ambulance and he would spend the night in a local hospital. IV tubes extended from his arms to a machine that nourished him to cure his severe dehydration. Trainers sat at the 26-year-old’s bedside, offering encouragement, knowing the immediate physical misery of their star pupil would eventually yield to a lasting glory.

Cerrone on Title Shot: ‘Henderson Can Be Knocked Out’

Apr-22-2010

Frank Curreri, UFC - In the mold of extraordinary fighters like Arturo Gatti and “Minotauro” Nogueira, Donald Cerrone has a knack for playing the role of human punching bag in a way that is equal parts mesmerizing, unbelievable and unforgettable. Yet when opponents hurt Cerrone, crazy as it sounds, he seems to have them exactly where he wants them. Time and again the lanky lightweight has been overwhelmed and embattled inside of the cage, particularly in rounds one and two, but he always storms back and transforms into a Cain Velasquez type of terminator who relentlessly stalks winded opponents and pushes them to the brink.

Brown, Gamburyan Set for Monster Mash

Apr-21-2010

Frank Curreri, UFC - Rag-dolling opponents and bullying them with brute force has been the M.O. for both Mike Brown and Manny Gamburyan, so something will have to give Saturday when the former featherweight world champion collides with the lightweight finalist from season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter.

The Blueprint: Aldo vs Faber

Apr-21-2010

Michael DiSanto, UFC - It’s the most significant featherweight fight in history.

Jose Aldo currently rules over the division with vicious efficiency. Since entering the US mixed martial arts scene two years ago, the reigning featherweight champion is a perfect in six fights. Each of them ended inside the distance due to strikes, including stopping highly regarded contender Cub Swanson with a double flying knee eight seconds into the fight—yes, a double flying knee.

Apr-20-2010

Michael DiSanto, UFC - Donald Cerrone will make his third attempt at lightweight gold on Saturday night. That is the good news.
