‘Awake Like Dead,’ South Korea’s Best Featherweight Heads To America

Frank Curreri, WEC - It is hard to hide in a crowd when you call yourself The Korean Zombie. His nickname commands attention, but owning an outrageous moniker is not Chan Sung Jung’s most memorable quality. The brash 23-year-old offers a relentless fighting style – where defense is an afterthought in the ring, his hands are habitually held low, and his chin is daringly exposed – that borders on mesmerizing.

Benavidez, Grispi to host UFC 111 viewing parties

Various theaters will have MMA stars hosting the evenings with Q&As, autographs and other fan events, including Joseph Benavidez hosting at a Sacramento theater and Josh Grispi holding court in Boston.

Bantamweight Benavidez recently became the first person to submit legend Miguel Angel Torres in their battle at WEC: Bowles vs. Cruz. The 6-1 fighter goes by a bevy of nicknames including the Whirling Dervish, the Tasmanian Devil, Joseph "The Beefcake" Benavidez, Reno (the biggest little man in the world) and Joey Pants. Benavidez will appear at Cinemark Roseville 14 in Roseville, Calif.

Grispi began his MMA training after being banned from a local paintball facility; the 145er is now undefeated in his WEC career with wins over notables including Jens Pulver and Mark Hominick. The Bostonian hosts at National Amusements Randolph Showcase Cinemas, 73 Mazzeo Drive in Randolph, Mass.

Coloradan Tyler Toner Preps for Unbeaten Visher

Frank Curreri, WEC - Roughly 2,800 people attended UFC 1 at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Co. One of those intrigued spectators was a 10-year-old Tae Kwon Do student named Tyler Toner. The boy didn’t find the spectacle – which happened to be unregulated at the time -- to be disturbing or violent. In fact, the only thing that shocked him, as would be the case for many who watched that night on Nov. 12, 1993, was witnessing a skinny Brazilian named Royce Gracie repeatedly conquer Goliaths to win the 8-man tournament.
