Fighter Biography

When and why did you start training for fighting? I started wrestling at around the age of 11.  Soon after that I saw the first few UFC shows.  Then I decided that I wanted to do that one day.  Immediately I started taking judo and several other martial arts that would gear me towards my goal.  So really I think I have been training for this all of my life.

What ranks and titles have you held?
I was the Greco-Roman and freestyle state champion of Florida several times when I was younger.  I was also the judo state champion of Florida.  I was a two-time All-American in the NCWA in college wrestling.

Do you have any heroes?
My heroes have always been the great athletes of MMA such as Bas Rutten and Frank Shamrock.

What is your favorite technique?
  Throws and takedowns.

What does it mean for you to fight in the WEC?
It’s an accomplishment that I’m very proud of.  I started in the WEC back when it first started and its an honor to have grown up with it and still be a part of the WEC today.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn?
I went to college for two years at Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, FL.

What was your job before you started fighting?
I worked several construction jobs.  I started fighting at a fairly young age so I did not really start any type of real career prior.  I am currently running a pawnshop while fighting MMA at the same time.

Most memorable professional fight? Hermes Franca in 2003. It was the first big fight I had. I was happy to have gotten a chance to fight in the UFC. I also got my arm broken in the fight, so I’ll always remember that.

What was your most challenging professional fight?
See above.

Did you compete in any other sport at college or professional level?
I wrestled in college and high school and did a lot of other sports, but not at the college level.

Who were your training partners for this fight?
I’ve been training at AKA in San Jose, so all the guys here have been helping me a lot, and also my students back home at my academy back in Daytona, the Armory.

Did you put more emphasis towards a fighting style or adjust your training to prepare for your opponent?
I train the same always. I try to get in the best shape possible. I’m gonna impose my offense, and it’s not gonna differ a lot depending on the opponent.

What, other than WINNING, are you using for motivation for the fight?
My family, my kids, I’ve got a lot of people counting on me, and I don’t want my little boy to see me lose so I’m pushing for the W.

What is your favorite thing about this sport?
After college, it’s the only direction you can go in that will still allow you to be competitive. Plus you can fight people and not get in trouble.

How long do you see yourself staying in this sport?
As long as my body will let me. I love the competition, I love the action.  Maybe another ten years.
