Training: Typically I do strength and conditioning in the morning, I rest/recover, then I do my MMA training at night.
When and why did you start training for fighting? I started fighting in 2005... I got into MMA because one of my friends was training for a fight and I helped him get ready for it. Then I cornered him and instantly after the fight I wanted to give it a shot! About 3 weeks later I had my 1st amateur fight.
What ranks and titles have you held? I was the featherweight Titan Fighting Champion (smaller show in KC) And I've fought for IFL, Affliction, and Sengoku
Do you have any heroes? My Dad is my biggest hero! After that I have a lot... just to name a few - Pat Miletich, Josh Neer, GSP, Anderson Silva, Michael Jordan, and the list goes on and on....
What is your favorite technique? Hmmm... I'd have to say ground n pound... nothin’ better than putting a good beatdown on someone!
What does it mean for you to fight in the WEC? It’s an honor to fight for the WEC... It’s the biggest show for 145ers and I feel thankful and blessed to be a part of it!
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I went to Labette Community College and Missouri Valley College - where I received a BS in Exercise Science
What was your job before you started fighting? I coached wrestling at Pratt Community College before I started training and fighting full-time
Most memorable professional fight (who, where, why)? Have to say it was against Rafael Dias, in NJ for IFL... It was a good fight that was really close and about to go to the judges, then I head kicked him and got the KO with 4 seconds left in the fight! That alone made it memorable but I also went into that fight w/ a bad injury! I was on crutches 2 wks before the fight and really couldn't walk well on my foot till a day or two before the fight! I had to fight limping so my opponent couldn't see that I was hurt! So, just to be able to fight was an accomplishment, and to win like I did was amazing!!!
What was your most challenging professional fight (against who, when, what was the outcome)? Same as most memorable fight just because I had to overcome so much and I was coming off of my 1st loss in MMA.
Did you compete in any other sport(s) at college or professional level (what sport, where, how long)? I wrestled in college for 4 years at Labette Community College and Missouri Valley College
Who were your training partners for this fight? I trained with a lot of different people for this fight.. I did 1st half of my training camp in Kansas City and Des Moines, IA.. I trained at Des Moines MMA with Josh Neer and Zack Micklewright. In KC, I trained with Authentic Boxing, Mike Colfax, Deryck Ripley, and my Strength Coach Dr. Tom Teter.. For the 2nd half of my camp I went to Las Vegas and trained with Xtreme Couture and worked my boxing with Gil Martinez.
Did you put more emphasis towards a fighting style or adjust your training to prepare for your opponent (what did you do differently/why)? I really focused on my overall MMA game because my opponent is really well-rounded, and I also spent a little extra attention on my Strength and Conditioning because my opponent seems to be really strong in that area.
What, other than WINNING, are you using for motivation for the fight? I’m motivated for every fight, but I think the winner of this fight will definitely be in the mix for the title.. So that gives me a little extra motivation.
What is your favorite thing about this sport? The competition! Being able to challenge myself, physically and mentally!
How long do you see yourself staying in this sport? Umm... not sure but I really don't want to be taking blows to the head when I'm 40!!!
