Fighter Biography

Thoughts on opponent, Dustin Poirier? Dustin is a young, talented, undefeated fighter. I’m looking forward to getting in the cage with him.

Training: Pro practice in the morning. One-on-one striking with Master Thong. Jiu-jitsu/Grappling wt Fabio Prado. Strength and conditioning 3 days a week at Mid-town S&C.

When and why did you start training for fighting?  I was a 2 time NAIA All American wrestler. Fighting was just a natural progression for me.

What ranks and titles have you held? NAIA National runner up 2004.

Do you have any heroes? Diego Corrales and my mom.

What is your favorite technique?  The one that wins the fight.

What does it mean for you to fight in the WEC? This means everything to me. This is a great opportunity for me to fight in one of the world’s best organizations.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I’m three units short of a degree in mass communications.

What was your job before you started fighting?  Senior account executive with an internet based company in San Francisco.

Most memorable professional fight (who, where, why)? My fight in Florida at WEC 36 against Rafael Dias. He was a good fighter and it was a tough fight.

What was your most challenging professional fight (against who, when, what was the outcome)? WEC 34 against Cowboy Cerrone. It was my first fight in the WEC and I took the bout on short notice. It was also my first and only loss.

Did you compete in any other sport(s) at college or professional level (what sport, where, how long)? I wrestled for 14 years and was a 2x NAIA All-American.

Who were your training partners for this fight? Justin Buchholz, Kyacey Uscola, Chad Mendes, Urijah Faber, Joe Benavidez, and the rest of the Team Alpha Male.

Did you put more emphasis towards a fighting style or adjust your training to prepare for your opponent (what did you do differently/why)? I was able to watch most of his fights on youtube. I started working stand up for a southpaw and worked a lot of ground and pound from inside the guard.

What, other than WINNING, are you using for motivation for the fight? Advancement, looking to get back in the title hunt, and, of course, higher paydays.

How long do you see yourself staying in this sport? Another 8 years minimum.
