Fighter Biography

Training: Hard work every day in all aspects of MMA

When and why did you start training for fighting? I actually started training as something to do for rugby off-season conditioning in the fall of 2004. I never did martial arts as a kid and thought I'd try it out for a little bit. Pretty soon I got hooked and quit rugby to pursue fighting.

Do you have any heroes? I wouldn't say I have any heroes. I like to pull different traits from a variety of people. Whether it be my grandpa's integrity, Pat Barry's right leg, or Ryu's Hadouken

What is your favorite technique? Whatever they don't see coming.

What does it mean for you to fight in the WEC? Training for 6 years and making all the sacrifices that come with being a professional fighter only have meaning if you can make it to an organization like the WEC. No one wants to their hard work to be in vain.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I went to Marquette University and earned a double major in International Affairs and German.

What was your job before you started fighting? I started fighting as soon as I graduated college from a private 4 -year university (much to every parents dream I assume). Before that, though, I had a bunch of different jobs: Caddy, dishwasher, working in a steel factory, interning for the United States Secret Service, and working for the United States Department of Commerce.

Most memorable professional fight (who, where, why)? My first professional fight. I had a lot of nerves going into it wondering if I was really cut out for this profession. After winning it, though, I knew it was what I wanted and that I wanted to make a career out of it.

What was your most challenging professional fight (against who, when, what was the outcome)? Against this guy Jake Omen. All my previous fights had ended in the first round and I beat on this guy for 5 minutes straight and he just wouldn't drop. I eventually KOd him in the 2nd, but still....

Did you compete in any other sport(s) at college or professional level (what sport, where, how long)? No

Who were your training partners for this fight? I trained with WEC vet Anthony Pettis, plus current and former UFC fighters Pat Barry, Razak al- Hassan, Red Schafer, Solomon Hutcherson, plus a bunch of the other great guys out at Roufusport in Milwaukee.

Did you put more emphasis towards a fighting style or adjust your training to prepare for your opponent (what did you do differently/why)? Well, fighting on short notice doesn't really offer that opportunity. I'm just going to go out there and do what I do best.

What, other than WINNING, are you using for motivation for the fight? To show everyone that I belong in the WEC with the big guns.

What is your favorite thing about this sport? That the best athlete doesn't always win -- you need heart.

How long do you see yourself staying in this sport? As long as my body holds out.
