Fighter Biography

Training: Go for a jog early in the morning, drive to the gym, grapple for a few
hrs, break for a bit to get some food/rest and start back up with stand up for a few hrs. Break for a bit, start up again with MMA. My day of training is about 7hrs all together.

When and why did you start training for fighting? I started fighting/training in 1993 - I starting fighting because I love the competition.

What ranks and titles have you held?
KOTC lightweight world champion

Do you have any heroes?
My father, Felix Valencia

What is your favorite technique?
Anything that works!

What does it mean for you to fight in the WEC?
It is a great accomplishment and I’m very proud to have the opportunity to be a part of something so great.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn?
East Los Angeles Community College, Fresno State University. I did not receive a degree.

What was your job before you started fighting?
Salesman for Anheuser Busch

Most memorable professional fight (who, where, why)? The Ian McCall fight. I get a lot of compliments on that one, and it was a fun fight.

What was your most challenging professional fight (against who, when, what was the outcome)? When I fought Dominick Cruz, I had a pinched nerve in my neck and I lost strength in my left arm. I was in bed for close to a month but I decided to take the fight anyway. I had a short training camp and fought essentially with one hand.

Who were your training partners for this fight?  Millennia Mixed Martial Arts

Did you put more emphasis towards a fighting style or adjust your training to prepare for your opponent (what did you do differently/why)? I focus on my own style of fighting and how I’m going to perform.

What, other than WINNING, are you using for motivation for the fight?
My two kids. I want to do well for them.

What is your favorite thing about this sport?
The people in general – the fighters that you meet, the people who admire you for fighting. That’s kinda special and it’s humbling.

How long do you see yourself staying in this sport?
I take it one fight at a time. I’ve been doing this since ’95, and I wrestled since ’89, but I’m not completely satisfied yet.
